Zia Siddique

I am a Computer Science graduate from the University of Bristol who enjoys using technology in creative ways. I am particularly interested in web development and audio engineering.

I know about front-end and back-end web development:

  • HTML5/JS/jQuery/Angular
  • Python/Django
  • PHP/SQL/phpMyAdmin
  • Bootstrap/Responsive Design
  • Google Maps API
  • Wordpress Integration

I've worked with other technologies aswell:

  • Java
  • C#/C/C++
  • Arduino
  • Git
  • PaaS (Heroku)
  • MaxMSP
  • Unity

Tangible Interfaces for Audio Mixing

I designed and implemented this interface as part of my individual research project. The interface aimed to create a more intuitive approach to mixing down songs, by moving away from channel-strips and instead working towards the stage metaphor.

Design - The table represents a virtual stage and the blocks each represent an instrument in the song. Moving the blocks around the stage affects the panning and volume of that block. There are further effects and controls on each block.

Implementation - I created a Diffuse Illumination table to track the spatial position of the blocks. The blocks were made using wireless arduinos which communicated with the host application. I used Max 7 for sound generation. The Max 7 patch interprets the blocks' spatial positions and serial communication from the blocks.

Evaluation - Participants overall found the new interface to be more intuitive than commercial digital audio workstations. However it lacked the vast feature set and flexibility of the software. This project gained a 1st class mark (72).
